The LSU Tigers are riding high. After taking care of business against the Texas Longhorns two weeks ago, they promptly dusted Northwestern State up 65-14 a week ago. Their offense is looking rather robust, having scored 65, 45, and 55 points in their first three games of the season. Such offensive production is almost unheard of down in the Bayou. But this is all the new normal for LSU, which should prove to be an asset going forward.
They’ll march into conference play with a 3-0 record under their belt, and they’ll first play the Vanderbilt Commodores. The ‘Dores are 0-2 on the year and are already in an 0-1 hole in conference play. That’s because they lost their opener to the mighty Georgia Bulldogs. Vandy hasn’t done a lot too well on offense, as they rank 14th out of 14 teams in the SEC in total offense. They are, thus far, the only team in the conference to not have an average of at least 100 yards per game on the ground.
Their passing offense has been middle of the road in the conference, which in . away is good enough for them, but won’t likely be enough for them against this potent LSU passing game, which is soaring above the rest right now. It ranks first in the conference, at a mark of 436.33 yards per game.
Basically, Vanderbilt will have to put up some kind of defensive performance to keep the Bayou Bengals in check. Given how things have played out this year, that is a tall order. Stranger things have happened, but… it’s probably not too likely
LSU has rolled through its early-season schedule, and now the No. 4 Tigers hit SEC play.
The Tigers’ newfound offensive firepower has led them to an average of 55 points per game in their first three contests, the most recent a 65-14 drubbing of Northwestern State behind yet another excellent game from quarterback Joe Burrow — an early Heisman contender.
Vanderbilt, meanwhile, is still looking for its first win of the season. The Commodores were off last week after losses to Georgia and Purdue to open the season.
